Every Minute A Child Reads Is A Mitzvah!

By Valerie Kashtan

Library Co-Chair, Temple Emanu-el

Have you noticed how much our kids are reading lately?!? On Sunday, February 3rd, the “KIDS FOR KIDS” Read-A-Thon kicked-off at Temple Emanu-el, Waterford, CT. This effort, initiated by Alex Kashtan, a Bar Mitzvah this year, and with the support of Rabbi Aaron Rosenberg, was presented to the students of Temple Emanu-el’s Religious School using an informative PowerPoint presentation that Alex prepared.

The excitement and enthusiasm created by this Mitzvah project has far exceeded expectations. Originally intended as a project for the Temple Emanu-el Religious School kids, this cause has gained the support of the kids and administrators of the Jewish Community High School, Solomon Schechter, and Bet Sefer of S.E. Ct.!

“KIDS FOR KIDS” is an organization that provides professional trauma services, safe houses, and special events and support groups for children who are affected by terrorism in Israel. Participating children will read for 2008 minutes between February 3 and April 27. Each child will solicit sponsors to pay them one penny (or more) for every minute they read (.01 x 2008 = $20.08). Alex’s goal is to raise at least $3,519. (Fun fact: 3+5+1+9 = 18).

So, now you know why Every minute a child reads is a mitzvah!

Please support the children of our community in their fundraising efforts to benefit “KIDS FOR KIDS”. Read-A-Thon literature and sponsor information are available from the Temple Emanu-el Library or by calling Valerie Kashtan .
